The SMJFL Board and Executive have today confirmed its position to uphold its decision to award the U15 Division 1 Preliminary Final match to Beaumaris Football Club. The East Brighton Vampires Junior Football Club (Vampires) is extremely disappointed with this result. The Club, Committee, supporters and parents remain incredibly proud of the way that our players have handled themselves in what has been a very trying and unnecessarily stressful process. The Under 15 Boys are a wonderfully resilient group of players.

The Vampires are disappointed in this result and will continue to work with the SMJFL and other Member Clubs to make improvements to the processes to ensure that these type of issues, in the future, are more effectively handled by all involved.

There are a number of inaccurate statements that have been made public regarding the match, however several facts remain unchallenged:

  • the scoreboard was deemed to be incorrect at ¾ time and remained incorrect throughout the last quarter to the end of the match and at all times was showing the Vampires team ahead;
  • the umpires only notified the Time Keepers and Ground Management with approximately 20 seconds to go in the match of the error;
  • the scoreboard was at no time corrected; and
  • as advised by the SMJFL, the Committee of the Beaumaris Football Club refused to play a rematch, despite the ambiguity surrounding the result.

The Vampires are committed to improving all processes to ensure the betterment of the game of AFL, the South Metro Junior Football League and our Club for the benefit of all member clubs and to ensure that the issue that confronted the Vampires does not occur to any other team in the SMJFL.

The Vampires will not make any further public comments on this matter, and we wish the players competing in the Finals this week all the very best.
