Scores: Vampires 4.7.31 Def by St Bedes Mentone 12.10.82

As St Bede’s coach stated after the game, “The scoreboard didn’t reflect the game – it was a great contest”. Whilst the boys battled bravely, a super impressive undefeated St Bede’s Mentone were just too strong and will go into the Grand Final as red hot favourites. Whilst they got the jump early to take a four goal lead at quarter time, the Vampires hit back and with their run and handball game in gear were able to score 4.4 to 4.2 over the next two quarters to reduce St Bede’s lead by the last change.
To the oppositions credit, they tackled ferociously as the Vampires looked to be gaining the ascendancy with fast run and handball and precision passing. Accordingly, they never let us fully take control in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to get the margin close enough to pounce at the final change, despite Langers and Bucky taking over through the middle and Caiden being lively up forward.
With a few opportunities to goal early in the last missed by the Vampires, the opposition were able to get some late goals in the dying minutes once the game was over to blow out the margin.
Without doubt, the Vampires team finished the year highly respected by the rest of the competition, and were very unlucky to miss out on third by percentage with a tougher draw – a position that would have seen us with a great shot at reaching the Grand Final. But, it wasn’t to be. But all the players know we are right in the mix to come back and give it a shake next year.
Well done to all the boys on a great season.
