Round One – South Melbourne V East Brighton Young Bloods
A gloomy morning greeted us at the Albert Park lake ovals with a sprinkle of rain here and there. The Young Bloods were excited to finally start the 2019 season.
The backline was kept busy in the first quarter as South Melbourne took full advantage of the kicking with the breeze booting 4 goals with our ball barley or maybe not even reaching our forward line. The Young Bloods needed to regroup and get serious. After a quarter time huddle with our forever encouraging coach Brenden a spark was ignited!
The second and third quarter were owner by the Young Bloods. To our advantage now kicking with the breeze the ball made it to our forward line. Oscar with his run and carry through centre to deliver the ball up forward. 2 ripper marks by Levi resulted in 2 goals, Asher Simmons booted his first goal of the year. We were back in the game.
The skys turned even darker heading into the third and the rain started. Our skills were on show as we continued our resurgence. Max T put his best leap forward to try claim an early mark of the year award. New recruit Bryce had a cracker dominating, a few unlucky goal attempts but exciting to watch his first game for the Young Bloods. Henry channeled the Dusty Martin don’t argue taught by Dad through some living room coaching followed by a right to left kick resulting in a goal, sensational. Our last goal by Oscar on his non preferred foot showing our skills training is working. We head into the last scores level.
The short burst of rain had passed but conditions were slippery. Once again the Young Bloods dominated with the ball spending a majority of its time in our forward but hand it to South Melbourne their back line was incredible, keeping us scoreless. Time wasn’t on our side and the game ended in a draw.
It was all smiles after this match as yet again the players and parents could sense another fantastic season of footy ahead with a great bunch of Young Bloods.
