In what was billed as a must-win match to keep finals hopes alive most of us showed up at Centenary Park for the big match against St. Peters. Unfortunately, the team didn’t show up until about 10 minutes into the first quarter.

After losing the toss we figured on a 3 to 4 goal breeze towards the right of screen. And St Peters took full advantage piling on the pressure to squeeze through two goals and numerous shots just missing their targets. Considering the circumstances the defence did reasonably well.

The boys took full advantage of kicking with the wind in the second quarter. Oli and Frankie capitalised on Richmond-esque like pressure in the forward line to convert a couple of tricky set shots. While Sebastian (who by the way turned up to the game with one boot in his kit…) kicked a great goal on the run from ‘outside 50’. Game on.

The second half was an arm wrestle. And just the way we like it. St Peters has two players who have been selected for SSV Squad and their class definitely showed winning multiple clearances. Despite having the wind in the third, we were able to keep St Peters goalless. Credit to the defence – the two Lachies, Harry, Sam Leonard for carrying the defence all day. Keep them to 2 goals all day.

In a grandstand last quarter, it took us about 10 minutes to land the knockout punch with a great running goal by James. Although his second attempt at a running goal ended up looking like a baby giraffe on rollerskates. I’ll give him a chop out though – he had been rucking for most of the day.

Great win in the end – tough opposition who needed the win as much as we did to book a place in finals.
